Maura Egan formally presented with the Benemerenti Medal

Maura was joined at 11.30am Mass in St. Mary’s Church Athlone by her family, friends and fellow parishioners who came to share in this very special occasion, both in Maura’s life and in the life of this parish.

The principal celebrant of Mass was Bishop Francis Duffy and the Mass was concelebrated by Fr. Frank Gray, former Administrator of this parish with whom Maura worked closely during her years volunteering with Cura, Fr. Shay Casey, Chaplain of Athlone Institute of Technology, where Maura assisted on their Chaplaincy team, Fr. Michael Hickey of St. Bridget’s Church in Drum and Fr. Michael Costello of Claregalway; all of whom played an important part in Maura’s life and in the contribution she has made to the life of Church in so many ways, and Fr. Declan Shannon.

Bishop Francis Duffy formally presented Maura with the Benemerenti Medal, awarded by Pope Francis to someone who has given exceptional service to the Church. This day has been a long time in coming; in truth this was the third attempt to organise and plan the presentation of this Medal and Award. Not even a pandemic was going to stop us celebrating this special occasion!

Congratulations Maura.
